Position summary
As part of the management team, the Technical Director shares responsibility in all areas of station activity, with particular responsibility for technical operations. The T.D. is directly responsible for the physical plant, engineering nneds of the station, broadcast operations, and studio services, and reports to the General Manager.
Qualifications summary
- Previous experience with Radio Operations required
- Thorogh knowledge of Radio Automation, Audio Over IP, Digital Asset Management. Traffic Systems
- Excellent Computer skills are a must with ability to address problems remortely (from home) as needed
- Classical Music On-Air Announcing/Host
- Detail oriented
- Project management experience a plus
- 5 years Radio experience, Classical / Public radio a plus
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
- prepare for and perform specified airshifts, and serve as primary overnight duty operator during automatic transmission system broadcast hours;
- serve as the designated Chief Operator for FCC purposes;
- supervise contract engineering services;
- oversee all technical aspects of operations, including station computers and network;
- train and monitor performance of all station employees in matters of technical operations;
- oversee existing studio and transmitter equipment and facilities, and installation/configuration of new equipment;
- plan the budget for the operations department, order equipment and supplies, and maintain inventory, in consultation with the General Manager;
- keep abreast of all FCC and other applicable rules and regulations, assuring WAUS compliance, including maintaining the Issues/Programs list for the Public File;
- liaison with NPR distribution, satellite operations and technical staff, and other equipment suppliers;
- schedule and coordinate use of studios for on-air and production work;
- oversee traffic to insure that all programs are available and in the proper place when needed;
- all air personalities are expected to participate in public events as scheduled and assigned by the General Manager; and perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory responsibilities
- Training of all employees, including student announcers in the technical aspects of broadcasting & technical equipment
- Coordinate with other WAUS Directors and GM in their technical requirements
Qualifications
- College Degree. Bachelor's or Master's Degree Preferred
- Experience in classical music a plus
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Problem solving
- Computer and Network management & administration
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Audition / Presonus Studio One
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Technical competencies
- Training or Certifications in Natural Log, Music Master, ENCO Automation and Playout, AXIA Broadcast Systems & Equipment or similar required.
- Audio Production Experience including studio recording, editing dialog and m,usic elements, mixing & mastering for broadcast; microphone technique, and recording classical instruments and ensembles up to and including choirs, symphonies and orchestras
- Broadcast Engineering experience in Transmitter maintenance and monitoring (in coordination with our contract Engineer)
- The Technucal Director must be able to respond quickly to emergencies with the On-Air Product both in-person and remotely
- Able to administrate AoIP signal, automation, and storage & playback of digital assets
Interpersonal interactions
- Must have a positive attitude & enjoy working in a fast paced and technically demanding live-broadcast environment
- Must be able to take direction, be a team player, and maintaion positive interactions with student workers, the public, and vendors
- Must be willing to work alternating holidays and occaisionally Sabbath hours as needed.
- Participation at WAUS Concerts and Functions is required

- Carry and move studio equipment & computers
- Must be able to lift 85 pounds
- Must be able and willing to work regular 8hr shifts starting at 6am and not usually after 7pm with emergency on-call 24/7
