Position summary
The substitute child care teacher works under the supervision of the lead teacher in all aspects of the care & education for the children enrolled in the class. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: physical care giving, developmental assessments, following an age appropriate curricular plan, and facilitation of supportive relationships with director, co-workers, parents, and students.
Qualifications summary
Must be able to follow oral and written directions and have the ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and students.
Ability to maintain effective classroom management strategies.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
Ensure the safety of each child enrolled in the class whether in the classroom, on the playground, or in common areas;
Accept and maintain responsibility on a daily basis for the ordered arrangement, appearance, decor, and cleanliness of the learning environment of the classroom;
Create safe and appropriate diapering, toileting, and handwashing areas and help children with all personal hygiene skills;
Implement age and developmentally appropriate classroom practices that will include the areas of physical, emotional, social and cognitive needs of the young children.
Serve as a role model for the children in the areas of attitude, speech and actions on a daily basis;
Treat each child with dignity and respect for his/her cultural background;
Encourage children's development in the areas of building self-confidence, problem solving, and taking responsibility for their actions;
Interact with each child on a daily basis through circle time, centers, snacks, lunchtime, playground, free play, etc.
Nurture positive relationships with parents and establish continual communication.
Other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Supervisory responsibilities
This position requires supervision of children. This position may also supervise student employees.
Qualifications
- Must be able to speak English, read and follow lesson plans left by teacher, and mange a classroom full of students.
- Must be at least 18 years of age with high school diploma.
- Must have a warm and friendly personality with sensitivity to the feelings and needs of both children and adults.
- Display a willingness to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the center's philosophy and mission.
- Job requires much physical activity and a high energy level.
- Accuracy and efficiency are required

Technical competencies
The employee must be able to operate at a reasonable level of competency, equipment common to the teaching profession, such as a computer, copy machine, paper cutter, VCR/DVD player, telephone, and tools such as brooms, dust pans, mops, vacuums, snow shovels etc.
Interpersonal interactions
- Must be comfortable interacting with the director, parents and other teachers
- Must love children.
Physical demands
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 25% walking, and 70% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Work environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
