Position summary

The position of Associate Dean in the Seventh-day Adventist Seminary requires a PhD or ThD degree in Religion with experience in teaching, administration, and leadership in higher education on the master and doctoral levels. This individual will carry the duties and responsibilities related to this position. The Associate Dean is responsible to supervise the academic aspects of Seminary programs, program assessments, preparing documents required by the Association of Theological Schools and other accrediting organizations, and be involved in Seminary students’ growth and experience in theological education. Must sign the Delimitation Statement of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary.

Qualifications summary

Earned PhD/ThD in Biblical, Theological, Applied Theology, Church History/Adventist Studies, Discipleship, or Mission. Must be a Seventh-day Adventist ordained/commissioned pastor with current ministerial credentials and membership in good and regular standing. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence in teaching, writing, service, pastoral and administrative leadership experience, a strong commitment to Seventh-day Adventist beliefs, and excellent interpersonal skills to effectively mentoring students and collaborating with colleagues. Be a team player and sensitive to different cultures.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

Support the Dean in expanding the vision and mission of the Seminary; oversight of academic degree programs; interact with Academic Records and Enrollment regarding student and faculty academic issues; correspond regarding accreditation changes, new programs, and revisions, update programs according to Association of Theological Schools and Higher Learning Commission policies; lead assessment evaluations and reports; coordinate academic matters with chairs and program directors; oversight of the proper assignment of faculty loads and offering of classes (so-called Smart Scheduling); assure quality of all programs; support students academically, answer their questions, and deal with their formal appeals; approve student admissions and petitions and deal with academic disciplinary issues. Review and implement University and Faculty Policies. Chair various master committees and vice chair doctoral committees. Actively participate in Faculty Meeting, Dean’s Council, Deans and Chairs Meeting, and different advisory committees. Participate in University and Church-wide committees. Function as acting dean when required by the Dean. Support various spiritual activities and Seminary clubs.

Supervisory responsibilities

Oversee various Seminary committees; direct Seminary Assessments and master’s degree programs; work with administrative and graduate assistants; and advise master and doctoral students in their various academic matters as needed.

Qualifications

Should be able to communicate effectively and dynamically both on popular and scholarly levels. A personal history of healthy relations, high moral integrity, and Christian spiritual maturity. Solid and balanced support of Seventh-day Adventist beliefs and mission.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Strong interpersonal skills; the ability to collaborate well with colleagues, and a disposition conducive to interacting winsomely with students and staff.

Physical demands

Should be able to fulfill administrative load and all responsibilities as expected in the Seminary Deans Office.

Work environment

Work environment conditions are similar to those found in any regular office and classroom environment.
