EDRM611: Applied Statistics

Errata for Hinkle, 5th edition, 2003

  1. Page 5: insert positive before square root in middle of page.
  2. Page 6: mult/div and add/sub are done left to right. ("stacked" exponentiation is safest parenthesized).
  3. Page 10: The all important Kelvin temperature scale is ratio.
  4. Page 11: Quantum mechanical values really are discrete!
  5. Page 12: delete numerical within classify and summarize data near bottom of page.
  6. page 14-15/662: problems 6c, 6d, and 7c have extra answers since the author did not treat the square symbol as a mathematical function.
  7. page 18: The code system is arbitrary (but equals the number of X or Y chromosomes).
  8. page 29: The author seems to have problems with the mathematical concept of curve.
  9. page 59: add negatively skewed (left) and positively skewed (right)
  10. page 80: The normal equation arises from a large number of choices (binomial with large n). IT IS NATURAL!
  11. page 114: no tied scores is insufficient to make Spearman rho equal to Pearson r. Use (5,1); (7,3); (9,5); (12,6) as an example: 0.969#1.
  12. page 144: families not only twins often share the same last name.
  13. page 148: omit equation 7.2; use equation 7.3 only and recognize the overlap as being zero.
  14. page 195: replace the exact with a precise near middle of page.
  15. page 196: line 3 replace inverse with reciprocal (ditto on page 247, two lines below gray box)
  16. page 203: label +/- part of equation 9.1 as margin of error.
  17. page 687: top equation is missing sqrt in demoninator.
