EAST RICHFORD (VERMONT) AND SUTTON (CANADA EAST)
SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH
Organized on December 27, 1862
This document is a transcription of the records of the East Richford, Vermont,
and Sutton, Canada East, Seventh-day Adventist Church as they appear in the
original. A copy of the original is located at the Center for Adventist Research,
James White Library, Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan.
This church was organized on December 27, 1862, and represents the earliest known record of a Canadian Seventh-day Adventist church. Even though it bears the name of a Vermont locality in its official name and in later years became known as the Richford church, during the first ten years of its existence, this church was predominantly a Canadian church. By comparing the membership list with the census records for Quebec in 1861, 1871 and 1881, I have found that at least 28 of the 47 names of members listed in the record book for the first ten years resided in Quebec. In fact, of the nine charter members on December 27, 1862, five resided in Quebec. Seventh-day Adventists practiced believers baptism by immersion. Names admitted into the church and inscribed in the record mean that such individuals had been baptized and were now accepted into full church membership. Children of church members not yet baptized were not inscribed into the records.
The record book is 6.25" x 7.37" (16.1 x 18.7 cm) and contains 124 unumbered folios.
I have transcribed this record book for a few reasons. First, it provides a more legible document since the handwritten original is sometimes difficult to read. Moreover, photocopies of the original cannot always reproduce the shades of ink nor the colour of ink used which at times varies within the same page. The transcription of this record also provides a better access to some interesting information about this early church in Seventh-day Adventism which otherwise would not be available to others than those who can come to Andrews University. Transcribing this record book also became a means for me to know first hand what had happened in this area of the Townships and more particularly in this church.
The transcription was not always easy to do because the spelling is often inaccurate and the punctuation is often deficient but as far as possible I have faithfully transcribed what appeared in the original. In the same manner I have kept the same page arrangement as in the original; this transcription has, therefore, the same number of written pages as the original. Also I have included in brackets various comments which are intended to give a more accurate description of the original.
It is my wish that this document will make it possible for future generations to get a flavour of what early Seventh-day Adventism was like in the Eastern Townships of Quebec and in northern Vermont in the last half of the nineteenth century.

For the first few names on the list, the column “Dismissed” is likely the date of admission into the church. Taking due time to consider the different cases submitted to them, on the eve of April 26, at a meeting held in the church, Eld. Burrill read the following decisions.
1st ‘Bro. Leonard Reed’. Charges against him by Sr. Alma Buchanan.
“That while living at their house several years since, being employed
to thresh grain by Bro. B. only threshed out part of the grain, and that his
object in so doing was to benefit himself by feeding his own cow of the straw,
and that the cow got fal [?] by such feeding.”
The above charges in our opinion were not sustained. Bro. B. himself testifying
that he was perfectly satisfied with Bro. Reeds work, and that his cows ate
the straw as well as Bro. Reeds.
[folio 19]
2nd ‘Sr. E. Reed’ Charges against her by Sr. Buchanan.
“That Sr. Reed repeatedly stole their wood and concealed it by covering
it with her apron.”
This charge was not sustained. Bro. B. did not seem to agree with his wife in
regard to the wood. He seemed to think Bro. & Sr. Reed had not gone beyond
the bounds of permission in taking what wood they did.
3rd “Sr. F. Lewis” Charges against her by Bro. James Buchanan.
1st That she did not take a proper oath and
2nd That she concealed or neglected to bring forth certain portions of property
belonging to the estate of the late Norman C. McClaflin.”
Not sustained. Yet we think Sr. L. has not manifested all that caution in her
talk about this matter that she ought.
4th The charges brought against Bro. Wm. McKinny by Bro. James Buchanan.
Viz. The stealing of corn and oats, are in our opinion not sustained. The following
are the reasons. 1st There was not direct proof sustaining such a charge. 2nd
The circumstancial evidences are of too weak and doubtful a
over
[folio 20]
a character to furnish sufficient evidence for conviction. 3rd The testimony
of Bro. McKinney in regard to the amount of oats he had and the disposal of
the same, while not conclusive
proof of his innocence, yet taken with the other evidence, strengthens our opinion
that he is not guilty of the charge of theft. And in view of these conclusions
we are constrained to say that Bro. Buchanan has acted very unwisely
1st In making such grave charges without sufficient evidence of the same, and
2nd In the manner of making the charges–not following the rule laid down
in God’s word to govern such cases.
Therefore it seems to us that a confession covering these points is due Bro.
McKinney from Bro. Buchanan.
5th Whereas Lorenzo Reed who covenanted with this church to keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and Whereas when having difficulty with a certain member failed to follow the Bible rule, and, Whereas when at church during some of the meetings showed a harsh head strong spirit, utterly ignoring
[folio 21]
what the bible says about a meek and mild spirit; and unwilling to be advised by his Brethren, On view of these facts it is our judgement that the church should withdraw the hand of fellowship from him.
6th Whereas Br. Wm. McKinney who covenanted with us to keep the commandments of God and Faith of Jesus, and whereas he has broken the Sabbath by going to the store and purchasing goods on that day, and occasionaly [sic] used some tobacco, and whereas he thinks he is now living in neglect of his duty to God, and the visible church of Christ upon the earth, by not having family prayers, and absenting himself from the house of God on the Sabbath; and almost wholly neglecting that which goes to make up the warp and woof of every day Christian life,– Therefore it is our opinion that he should be suspended from the church untill [sic] such times as he shows that he is performing the Christian duties of every day life; and in case this is not seen by the first Sunday in October 1884 his relation to the church will be severed.
over
[folio 22]
7 Whereas Sr. Anna McKinney who covenanted with this church to live a consistent devoted Christian life, has so far come short of it that she has behaved herself very unchristian like toward certain of the church; and taken her affections from Jesus whom she covenanted to love more than all others, and at present thinks she would not be even a fit subject for baptism and uniting with the church if she had not already done so– thinks that her efforts toward being a Christian are very feeble, acknowledges she is much stirred with hateful feelings toward those whom she thinks have injured her. Knowing this is all wrong and contrary to the requirements of Christ, it is our judgement that she should be suspended from church fellowship until such times as she shall show genuine repentance and devotion to Christ and his cause. And in case this is not seen by the first Sunday in October 1884 the church may consider her dismissed.
8 Alma C. Buchanan.
On our opinion the charges of Sr. Buchanan against Bro. L. Reed of being unfaithful
in threshing oats, and Sr. Reed of stealing wood, and Bro. Wm McKinney of stealing
oats and corn were not sustained for
[folio 23]
1st the testimony of Bro. Buchanan and Bro. Reed showed that he was faithful
in the threshing. 2nd that the testimony of Bro. B. relative to Sr. Reeds stealing
wood showed her innocence. 3rd that the charges against Bro. Wm. McKinney were
unsustained by any direct evidence, and the circumstancial was of such a nature
that we feel safe in rendering the above decisions.
And further that since Sr. B. is one of the oldest member of this church, and
ought to be a “Mother in Israel” and a peace maker, but on the contrary
we find her to be filled with jealousy and surmisings toward the church and
unwilling to acknowledge herself wrong when shown to be so, as in the case of
the wood. Further when reproved and admonished by her husband as illustrated
in the investigation would not receive it. Then the rhyme reading to outsiders
showed a willingness not only to make a reproach but to bear it to others, and
too, for the express purpose of injuring the reputation of a Bro. & Sr.
in the church instead of carrying out Christ’s positive instructions in
Matt 18:15-18. From the troubles which have arisen from charging theft upon
others, and that to, when the supposed stolen article would be found in
over
[folio 24]
her own possession as illustrated in the cotton sheet which was lost and found by herself where she had left it. We would earnestly entreat her to learn the lesson that she should have positive as well as circumstancial evidence that a thing had been stolen before she makes such a charge; and then when there is sufficient evidence take the steps of labor in accordance with the word of God. And in view of all these things it becomes our painful duty to say in our judgement Sr. Buchanan should be suspended from the church until such times as a thorough reform shall be manifest in her daily life.–bearing the fruits of the Spirit such as love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Gal 5;22-24. And further that she should reflect upon the following scriptures Titus 2:3-5 “That the aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers....teachers of good things. That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands that the word of God be not blasphemed.
[folio 25]
See also 2 Thess 3:11,12, and in case these things are not sufficiently manifested
to show a reform by the first Sunday in October 1884 she may no longer be considered
connected with this church.
The above resolutions, and decisions in these several cases as rendered by Elders
Hutchins & Burrill were then discussed by the church, and approved without
a dissenting vote.
Elder Burrill then presented the following Resolution. Whereas we believe that
those who have entered into covenant to keep the commandments of God and the
faith of Jesus cannot indulge in the use of tobacco and opinions, without breaking
said covenant, thereby bringing ourselves under the displeasure of Him who commands
us to “Cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit perfecting
holiness in the fear of God” 2 Cor 7:1 And whereas these poisonous weeds
are condemned in Spiritual Gifts Vol 4 P126 as idols, and no idolator can enter
the Kingdom of God Eph 5:5 and whereas reports come to us that certain of our
members are using them, Therefore Resolved that scriptural labor be bestowed
upon all such and in case they will not hear the church, fellowship shall be
withdrawn from them on or before the second

quarterly meeting following said labor, provided the church act under the advice
of the Conference Committee.
The above resolution was then discussed by different members of the church,
and unanimously adopted.
These decisions were rendered and acted upon Eve of Apr 26 84. Finished

In regard to the case of Bro. Wm. McKenney a resolution was passed as follows. East Richford Dec. 26, 1908
According to appointment we gathered at the church to celebrate the ordinance
of the Lords house. A goodly number were present and Eld. O. Montgomery our
conference president spoke on the subject of the ordinances after which we had
a testimony meeting in which all present took part. Sr. Cynthia Cross’
name was presented to the church for membership It was stated that she was a
member of the Jericho church which was long since disbanded so that she could
not get a letter. She was therefore taken into the church by unanimous vote
of all present on the profession of her faith. The ordinance of feet washing
was observed after which the Lords supper was celebrated.

A meeting was called to order according to appointment Dec 26 - 1908 by Eld.
O. Montgomery president of the Vermont Conference.
Eld. Montgomery called for some letters which had been received from absent
members of the church which were read giving us new courage in the fact that
they were still faithful. Bro. Hartson Lamonda and Bro. Eugene Cross both asked
that their names might be dropped from the church record. But it was thought
best not to do so until Eld. Montgomery could see them and labor with and for
them. Sr. Josephine Clark requested a letter to join the North Wolcott church
which was granted also a letter to Bro. Seymour Clark to the same church. Eld
Montgomery thought best to reelect the officers which was done by taking each
name separate. For Elder P.L. Cross, Deacon J.E. Gage. Clerk Alice J. Gage.
Treasurer Annie McKinney.
Eld Montgomery gave some good instructions to the officers. The clerk should
keep a faithful record of every quarterly meeting as well as business meetings.
Bro. Montgomery gave us some good instructions showing our duty as
[folio 35]
to paying tythes [sic] and offerings. The article of the association were then
read. It was found that only one member of the church belonged to the association
and the only way we could hold the property was by a special act of legislature.
Remarks were made by Bro. Dow McKiney [sic] and others concerning the transfer
of the church property to the Vermont Conference to hold in trust for us. A
vote was finaly [sic] taken to give Bro. Montgomery the right to put the matter
before the legislature which was carried with only two dissenting voices. The
officers for the SSchool were then elected as follows
Supt Herman Dow
Asst Supt John Gage
Sect Alice Gage.

[The last seven pages of the record book are updated membership lists. The first three pages (folios 117, 118, 119) are a list of names to which was added various decisions and dates through a number of years. This new list was written around the beginning of 1890 and ends with the name of “Mary Chamberlain” on the second page; various decisions of the church and dates were added to these names after the list had been rewritten. After the name of “Mary Chamberlain” the color of ink and sometime the handwriting are different down to the name of “Clara Bryant” on the third page (folio 119). From the next name, “Cynthia Cross”, on to the end of the other membership lists in the record book Alice J. Gage is the secretary. Sometimes names are crossed out and a new date written above the first one with different colors of ink and handwriting styles. Whereas in the book not a single line is skipped, for sake of clarity I have written on a different line below the added comments and dates. Also for sake of clarity I have not used ditto as it often appears in these lists.]
