---------------Frequently Asked Questions----------------
Why can’t I register for CHEM131?
·
Every year there
are many questions about enrolling into General Chemistry. The most significant requirement is to
have adequate mathematics skills.
AU assesses your mathematics ability in a couple of different ways, but the
best way has been through a passing score on the Math Placement Exam
(MPE). You must score a P3 or
higher in order to register for this class. There are some exemptions (eg. ACT math score > 30) or passing a college algebra
class.
·
Since the Fall 2013, your mathematics score on the ACT or SAT is
automatically converted into an MPE score.
This greatly reduces the number of students required to take the
MPE. Your preVue
or iVue account should have this information.
·
For more
information about the MPE and how it is scored, please click on this link to
the AU Math Department Webpage: MPE (Math Placement
Exam).
·
You must have a
MPE score of P3 or higher registered into the AU class registration system in
order to be eligible to enroll.
Can I still get into the class? What if it fills up?
·
If you are unable
to register for CHEM131 because you have not taken the MPE or did not have one
of the exceptions…have no fear!
We have not turned away eligible students because the room was too full
or the laboratory sections filled up. We will fit you all in!! But you have to wait until you get a
passing score on the MPE.
·
Therefore, you
will need to wait until the week before classes to take the MPE. This is the case for many/most
students. See the schedule on the MPE
website.
·
If you meet one
of the exceptions, but still cannot enroll, then you might need to contact the registrar’s
office.

Ok.
I’ve passed the MPE, but finances or something else is holding up
my registration. Can I still come
to class?
·
Yes! Come to class and lab.
·
Since your
registration is delayed, you probably cannot get into Moodle. That is ok. You can do everything else like attend
class, get your textbook, etc.
Moodle access is the only thing tied to your AU registration.
·
These things are
not tied to AU registration so you can do them at any time.
