Helen Prejean speak.
Prejean is the author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty (1993),
a true account of her experience working with the capital punishment system as
a spiritual advisor to several inmates.
She was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in
1993 and a spot on the 1994 American Library Associates Notable Book List. It remained
at the top of the New York Times Bestselling List for 31 weeks. In 1996, a film
adaptation starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn was released.
Prejean continues to speak, lecture, and educate on the death penalty around the United States. Her second book, The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions (2004) chronicles the story of Dobie Gillis Williams and Joseph O’Dell, two men who were wrongfully executed.
