Swallen Mission Lectureship

The Theological Seminary hosts the events, with guest speakers Stephen Bevans and Roger Schroeder.

The Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary hosts the 10th Swallen Mission Lectureship in the Seminary Chapel. This year’s theme is "Ever Faithful, Always Changing: Postcards from the History and Theology of Mission," featuring guest speakers Stephen Bevans and Roger Schroeder from the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago.

From 9-10:30 am, there will be a presentation called "A Prophet, a Guru, and a Bishop: Bartolome de las Casas, Mateo Ricci, and Samuel Ajaji Crowther," followed by "Certainty, Ferment, Crisis and Rebirth: Mission in Emerging World Christianity" from 10:45 am-12:15 pm. Sessions will start up again at 2:30 pm, with "Jesus as Universal Savior: Catholics and Seventh-day Adventists in Mission" till 4 pm. The final presentation, "A Single but Complex Reality: The Manifold Aspects of Mission Today," will be from 7:30-9 pm.

Bevans is a professor of Mission and Culture at the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago and brings with him mission experience in the Philippines (1972-81). He holds a doctorate in theology from the University of Notre Dame.

Schroeder is a professor of Catholic Missiology and worked in Papua, New Guinea as a missionary for six years. He earned his doctorate from the Pontifical University in Rome.

The Swallen Mission Lectureship was inspired by Clarence Swallen, an individual with a passion for missions. A large donation was made in his honor after his death to continue missionary work at Andrews University. For more information, please call 471-6505 or e-mail mssn@andrews.edu.
