SBT: Professor Helps with Breakthrough Astronomy
When news of the discovery of gravitational waves came last week, Andrews University professor Tiffany Summerscales breathed a sigh of relief. As one of the scientists whose work led to the breakthrough, she had been keeping the secret since last fall.
The first gravitational wave from the collision of stars 1.3 billion light years away was actually detected on Sept. 14, 2015, but scientists kept mum about their “eureka” discovery until all the data was reviewed and confirmed. “It was hard to keep the secret,” Summerscales said Friday. “I wanted to run down the hall screaming the news.”
