Emily McAndrew describes the title character in Carlisle Floyd’s two-act opera “Susannah” as someone who is “young and happy, and a little bit naive” when the story begins.

“But that’s the thing I really love about this character is her self-discovery,” McAndrew says. “As the show progresses, it’s interesting to see her become this really strong woman even though it’s through very tragic circumstances.”

McAndrew, a St. Joseph native, steps into that tragic story tonight and Saturday when Andrews University’s Department of Music presents “Susannah” at the Howard Performing Arts Center.
