The citation accompanying his honorary degree from Yale describes best-selling author David McCullough, "As an historian, he paints with words, giving us pictures of the American people that live, breathe, and above all, confront the fundamental issues of courage, achievement, and moral character." He has written 10 acclaimed books (more than nine million copies of his works have been printed). They cover such topics as 1776, the Johnstown Flood and most recently, the Wright Brothers. His two Pulitzer Prize-winning works, John Adams and Harry S. Truman, were adapted by HBO into a TV mini-series and film respectively.

Over the course of his illustrious career, McCullough has been an editor, essayist, teacher, lecturer and 12-year host of public television's The American Experience. With his mellifluous voice he has narrated numerous documentaries, including The Civil War by Ken Burns, as well as the 2003 film Seabiscuit.

McCullough has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received the National Book Award, the National Humanities Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and more than 40 honorary degrees. He is one of a few private citizens to speak before a joint session of Congress and at the White House.

A gifted speaker, McCullough will share his passion for the past and its importance right now. This event is presented by the Economic Club on Wednesday, May 18, at 6 p.m. in the Mendel Center, located at 2755 E. Napier Avenue, Benton Harbor, MI 49022.
