M-Prize is an international chamber arts competition based in Ann Arbor, at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. On Thursday, May 19th, at 5:30 P.M. ET, viewers will have the chance to watch the competition LIVE by visiting http://dptv.org/mprize.

Detroit Public TV is proud of its ongoing partnership with Aaron Dworkin; a partnership that amplifies the conversation around diversification in the arts to a global audience through production and live streaming the Sphinx Competition Concert and SphinxCon. Last year, the University of Michigan made a bold and important move with the announcement of Dworkin as the new Dean of the School of Music, Theater and Dance. Thursday, Michigan launches another ground-breaking effort with M-Prize.

M-Prize showcases the highest caliber of international chamber arts ensembles and provides them a professional performance and adjudication platform.  The goal of the M-Prize competition is to launch and advance the careers of chamber ensembles through prizes and professional development opportunities, which in turn will evolve the breadth and depth of the chamber arts landscape and associated professional opportunities for exceptional ensembles.

From Crain’s Detroit Business: “The competition includes two divisions — Junior, for ages up to 18, and Senior, for ages 19-35 — and three categories: strings, woodwinds and open instrumentation. Twenty-nine groups representing three countries and 17 states have been selected to participate in the semifinal and final rounds. M-Prize received 172 applications from 13 countries. Competition founder Aaron Dworkin calls it a ‘game-changer’ for chamber music that should draw new audiences.”
