The Andrews University Department of Music invites the community to attend a gala concert in the Howard Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, in celebration of Veterans Day. Featured performers include the Andrews University Singers & Chorale, directed by Stephen Zork, and the Berrien Springs High School Concert Choir and Bel Canto, directed by Carrie VanDenburgh. Both groups will be commemorating in song those who have dedicated their lives to serving the United States of America. The concert is free to all, but there will also be a freewill offering.

“The concert comes at a crucial time in our country’s history: a few days after Election Day,” says Zork. “With so much doubt and division wracking the nation, it is good to be reminded that we are all still part of the same fabric that represents the country. The music presented at this concert is meant to place hope into those who can attend.”

The evening’s program will contain a variety of music, paying homage to the 1860s through to the modern day. Some songs featured include: “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” arranged by Peter Wilhousky; “When the Saints Go Marching In,” arranged by John Rutter; “Corner Stone,” arranged by Shawn Kirchner; and “He That Ruleth Over Men, Must Be Just,” by Randall Thompson.

Additionally, there is a medley piece titled “A Sentimental Journey Through the 40s.” Arranged by Hawley Ades, it contains “Gonna Take a Sentimental Journey,” “It’s a Big, Wide, Wonderful World,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “You Are My Sunshine,” and “Somewhere, Over the Rainbow.” The final piece of the evening will be “Homeland,” arranged by Z. Randall Stroope and performed by the combined voices of all choirs—over 200 members altogether.
