About the Speaker

Denis Fortin is professor of theology at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan, and until recently served as dean (2006-2013). Since joining the Seminary faculty in 1994, Fortin has served, at various times, as director of the Master of Divinity program, associate dean, and chair of the Department of Theology and Christian philosophy.

Born in Quebec City, Canada, Fortin is a graduate of Canadian University College, Alberta, and the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary of Andrews University. He holds a Doctorate in Theology from the Université Laval in Quebec. Prior to coming to Andrews University, he served as a pastor in the Quebec Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

He is a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., and has served on numerous committees for the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Fortin has authored several publications on Adventist history and theology. He is co-editor of the Ellen G. White Encyclopedia (Review and Herald, 2013).

Fortin is married to Kristine Knutson, director of the Student Success Center at Andrews University.

About the Topic

This year is the 125th anniversary of the publication of Ellen White’s Steps to Christ, a short book which has been translated into over 165 languages and is her most widely printed book. To mark the anniversary, Dr. Fortin has prepared an academic, scholarly edition of the book which is being published by Andrews University Press. For each chapter, he has prepared annotations and an introduction, attempting to locate Steps to Christ within the wider historical theological tradition of Christianity.

The book includes an appendix listing the known antecedent sources of the book, which is a compilation prepared by White’s assistant, Marian Davis. In his presentation, Dr. Fortin will illustrate how Ellen white prepared books with the help of Marian Davis, a topic which has received little discussion in official Seventh-day Adventist publications.
