Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra Spring Concert

Community Announcements | Posted on April 25, 2018

Members of the LMYO Winds will present their inaugural performance at the Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra Spring Concert at 4:00pm, Sunday, May 6, 2018 at the John and Dede Howard Auditorium, St. Joseph High School, 2521 Stadium Drive, St. Joseph, MI.  The newly formed ensemble, directed by Dr. John Owens of Lake Michigan College, was created to provide a supplemental experience for middle school wind, brass and percussion players from the region. The concert will additionally feature performances by the Concert Strings, conducted by Beth Oeseburg, Encore Strings, conducted by Joe Oprea, and the Youth Symphony, conducted by Burke Lokey.

Highlights of the concert include three pieces by the LMYO Winds set to the original Georges Méliès silent film Le Voyage dans la Lune from 1902. As Dr. Owens shares, the audio/visual combination “will be linking the works to create a gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art).”

Additionally, the concert will showcase two accomplished senior soloists. Esther Kraus will perform Piano Concerto in A minor by Robert Schumann and Jared Jaggi will present the Trumpet Concerto in A flat major by Alexander Arutiunian. An audience favorite, Mars, the Bringer of War from The Planets by Gustav Holst, will also be performed by the Youth Symphony.

Tickets for the concert are $5 adults or $3 children/seniors and are available at the door.

As an educational component of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra, the Youth Orchestra has provided an orchestral experience for talented young musicians in southwest Michigan from kindergarten age to college senior for over 40 years. The four ensembles reflect the advancement to more complex music as students progress on their instruments. Membership is by audition. The orchestra performs four public concerts each year, and the program includes scholarships to summer music camps, sectional rehearsals with members of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra and free tickets to SMSO concerts.
