The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra (SMSO) presents its 2018-19 Season opening concert, Romantic Cello, Sunday, October 14, 2018, 4:00pm at the Howard Performing Arts Center in Berrien Springs.

The concert showcases the talents of Ifetayo Ali-Landing, who at age 14 was the 2017 Sphinx Competition Junior Division winner. The annual Sphinx Competition is held in Detroit to serve the goals of encouraging, developing and recognizing classical music talent in the Black and Latino communities. Ms. Landing will perform the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1.

Complementing the Saint- Saëns will be the “Classical Symphony” by Prokofiev and Franck’s Symphony in D Minor. Conductor Robin Fountain says of the concert repertoire, “I wanted to find pieces that supported the cello piece and featured the unique talents of our players.”

The concert will also include a pre-concert conversation with Maestro Fountain and Ms. Ali-Landing at 3pm, a post-concert reception in the lobby, and Small Business of Note guest Quinlan & Fabish Music Co. of Stevensville, MI.

During Ms. Ali-Landing’s visit, she will offer educational outreach sessions with the Boys and Girls Club of Benton Harbor and local school children.
