Death of Anna Lucia Kim

Life Stories | Posted on December 4, 2018

We are saddened to inform the campus of the death of Anna Lucia Kim, a graduate of Andrews University. Anna passed away on Friday, Nov. 30, in a tragic car accident in Berrien County.

Life Sketch

Anna Lucia Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea, on February 2, 1994, to the lovely Kim family. She was such a joyful and heart-warming child to her parents as she was the first-born. Her musical passion started early on. She started playing on a keyboard at age 3. She entertained herself and her parents by singing and dancing along with the kids’ show “Barney & Friends.” As she grew up in Korea and the U.S., she really nourished her musical talents.

Anna was an outgoing, social and energetic person with lots of talents in other areas, as well. She loved swimming, scuba diving, playing soccer, painting, taking photographs, cooking and being creative with different styles of facial makeup. She was also a natural at looking after her dear friends.

As a choir member at Highland View Academy in Maryland, Anna’s voice grew more mature, and she started performing domestically and internationally. When she came to Andrews University, she decided on a major in sociology and continued her passion for music by choosing it as a minor. She received her Bachelor of Science in 2016 and completed a master’s degree in community & international development.

Anna’s special songs and performances brightened and touched the hearts of many people. Furthermore, most of her internships were music-focused with Primo Artists in New York and the Grand Rapids Symphony in Michigan.

For years to come people will always comment on the warmth and welcome they felt with Anna.

Anna left us too soon when her life was tragically cut short in a car accident in Berrien County, Michigan, on Friday, November 30, 2018.

Goodbye for now, dear Anna. We will see you soon!

My husband, an Andrews University retired seminary professor, and I never had the privilege of getting to know Anna, but we were blessed by her music. Earlier, we spent 11 years working at Korean Sahmyook University, and we feel a close bond to all Korean people. They were always very hospitable and gracious to us as foreigners. We know what a great geographical distance lies between our countries. During their early years, our 4 children couldn't know their grandparents except by pictures, audio tapes, letters, and packages. Thus we can imagine what a terrible loss you must feel now, after years of separation, and now adding such a permanence to the separation. We have prayed for you privately and at our church services this morning. I commend to you the hope of Anna's resurrection to eternal life soon, when Jesus comes again to this earth. Anna became family to us at Primo Artists this Fall as our intern, dedicated in all she did to support our work. It was only 3 months that we knew her, but she will always be a part of us and we miss her dearly. Love to her family from Team Primo

I'm broken-hearted to hear about Anna. I was the registrar at HVA while she was there, and one of the sponsors for her class. In my mind's eye I see her coming into my office, exited about some good news or upset about an injustice, but always passionate and invested. I loved talking to her. Anna was so determined, both to achieve her goals and to have as much fun as possible along the way. You could hear that laugh of hers from the other end of the ad building. She was a force for good, and I feel fortunate both in my memories of her and the inspiration I take from them. Julie Recker

To Anna’s Father and Sister, As I’m sure you know very well, Anna was one of the most genuine and passionate people on this earth. She took time for people, including me, even though I didn’t see her often. She treated me as a close friend, shared some of her struggles with me, and always seemed so happy to see me. Her heart was so beautiful and I know she would want all her loved ones to have the opportunity she had to get to know Jesus. We look forward to seeing her again soon, and pray that in her death even more than in her life (which is hard to imagine), the light and love of Jesus will be spread to the world. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

She was beautiful. We didn't talk much but my memories of her were dear to my heart. She was always so complimentary to me and had a little bit of sass to her sweetness. A true gem that left too soon. Rest easy sweet Anna. ~ Bri Berry

I’m a currently a student at Oakwood University and I remember when we lost not only one student tragically but two. So I am encouraging you all the way from Huntsville Alabama. That this earth is not our home. I’m reminding all that we have this HOPE in Jesus Christ. John 14:1 says to “ let not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God believe also in Me, for in my Father’s house there are many mansions ..”” We have hope!!! To the parents ROMANS 8:18 Keep the Faith. Claudis Brown

I got to know Anna when I accompanied the HVA choir to Russia and Ukraine. I loved her spunk and her genuine kindness...and will always remember her focus and passion as she sang. And that voice...that beautiful voice. I cannot wait to hear her solo when we get to Heaven, because the angels will just close their eyes and listen. Just like me. Kandace Zollman

Dr. Rose Gamblin, one of her teachers from Highland View Academy. Very sad to hear this news. Anna was an exemplary student. She was a friend to all. We suffered with her at the loss of her mother and gain some sweet assurance that Anna's journey on this earth is over and she can rest with her mother until Jesus comes.
