The Michiana Adventist Forum presents “Living Longer, Living Better: Exploring the Adventist Health Studies” with Gary E. Fraser, MD, PhD, the long-time director of the Loma Linda Adventist Health Studies, on Saturday afternoon, September 28, 2019, at 3:30 p.m in the Garber Auditorium in Chan Shun Hall on the campus of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI.

About the Speaker

Gary Fraser was the Director of Adventist Health Studies at Loma Linda University Health for 32 years, up until his retirement a few months ago. He mentored and contributed to nearly all publications from Adventist Health Study-1 (AHS-1), then initiated and guided development of AHS-2. Over the years he has maintained about a half-time cardiology practice (less now). He still works on AHS-2.

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand (NZ), Fraser received his medical degree from Otago University, Dunedin, NZ and a PhD in epidemiology and a postgraduate diploma in mathematical statistics from the University of Auckland, NZ. He has an FRACP (NZ medical specialist) qualification and American board cerrtification in Cardiovascular Medicine. Professionally, he has received more than $30 million in research support (mainly from the US National Institutes of Health) and has, so far, 210 peer-reviewed publications and two books published by Oxford University Press.

With his wife he spends 30-40% of the time in NZ (mainly working on AHS-2 while there) and increasingly enjoys reactivating skills in piano performance. He also enjoys wilderness walking in both NZ and California, as well as visiting children and grandchildren scattered from Boston to Hawaii to NZ. He is an active member of the Loma Linda Sabbath Forums Sabbath School class.

About the Presentation

In his presentation Dr. Fraser will address several topics:

  1. How does the health of Adventists compare to that of others?
  2. Is vegetarianism mainly an American/Australasian Adventist sub-cultural oddity. Is it actually important for health?
  3. How does the health of vegans compare to that of lacto-ovo vegetarians?
  4. Are there key foods to include or avoid?
  5. What about religiosity and health among Adventists?
  6. Hot new finding

Adventist Forum is open to the public. All are welcome. To join the chapter, contact Art Robertson atrobertsa2@earthlink.net or call 471-7150.
