Andrews University Wind Symphony Winter Concert

On Saturday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m., the Andrews University Wind Symphony, under the direction of Byron Graves, will perform its winter concert. The event will feature an annual partnership with the Southwestern Michigan College Brass Band, under the direction of conductor Mark Hollandsworth.

The performance will explore an outdoors theme, with music from the Grand Canyon (“Sunrise at Angel’s Gate” by Philip Sparke), the Sierra Nevada (“The Grand Sierras” by Gary Kuo), an Illinois barn dance (“Spoon River” by Percy Grainger/arr. Bainum), a Roman volcano (“Vesuvius” by Frank Ticheli), Rudyard Kipling’s poem “The White Seal” (“The Seal Lullaby” by Eric Whitacre), and a tribute to the late Stephen Sondheim/arr. Bulla (“In the Woods”).

First, the Wind Symphony will perform “Russian Christmas Music” (Alfred Reed), followed by “O Magnum Mysterium” (Morton Lauridsen). The first half of the concert will conclude with “Symphonette” (Stephen Bulla).

After the intermission, they will play “Spoon River: An American Folk Dance,” “The Seal Lullaby,” “Sunrise at Angel’s Gate,” selections from “Into the Woods,” and “The Grand Sierras.” The program will close with a performance of “Vesuvius.”

Audience members in attendance will be required to wear a mask. Seating distance between attendees may be increased based on the evolving COVID situation in Berrien County.

Tickets for this event can be purchased at howard.andrews.edu and are $7 for general seating and $5 for students and seniors. There is a two-ticket limit if purchasing with a student ID.
