Guest Speaker Bio:
Matthew Maas is the director of the Environmental Resources Training Center at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He obtained a BSc in biology from Coastal Carolina University, Conway, South Carolina, in 2021. He has certifications as a Drinking Water Operator and a Wastewater Operator and serves on the Exam Review Committees for these certifications in Illinois. He has 20 years of practical and management experience in operations, water quality and environmental science. As an Operations Manager in Sacramento, Matt was responsible for 12 districts and 125 sites. As a Water Quality Supervisor in Missouri, he oversaw a $40 million plant renovation and the 2011 Joplin tornado response. Additionally, he led a collaboration effort with SMUD on the water-energy nexus. This resulted in the development of an automated demand response system that could modify water pressure zones based on energy availability.

Co-host Bio:
Sian Cuffy-Young is an award-winning waste management educator, consultant and social entrepreneur from Tacarigua, Trinidad. She is an alumnus of El Dorado West Secondary School. She holds a master’s in environmental engineering, a diploma in environmental management and is a Fulbright Hubert Humphrey fellow from Cornell University where she specialized in Natural Resource management and climate change policy. Sian is the founder, CEO and principal consultant of Siel Environmental Services Limited. With over 17 years’ experience in the field, Sian works in the areas of waste education and literacy, circular economy, and waste reduction as well as waste project consultancies. She encourages individuals and businesses to become waste efficient.
