GUEST SPEAKER BIOS
Dr. Susan Buchanan is a clinical associate professor of environmental and occupational health sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health and is director of the Great Lakes Center for Reproductive and Children’s Environmental Health. This center, funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the CDC’s Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, is designated as the Pediatric Environmental Specialty Unit for federal EPA Region 5. She is board certified in Occupational and Environmental Medicine and sees patients in the University Health Services clinic at UI Health.

Princella Tobias, the first African American female newspaper publisher in Southwest Michigan, is founder and Chief Executive Officer of the award-winning 21-year-old Benton Spirit Community Newspaper (“Benton Spirit”) located in Benton Harbor, Michigan. She has also spearheaded several initiatives to uplift the community of Benton Harbor. A few include creating (a) two well-received community-based history calendars in collaboration with students attending Benton Harbor High School, (b) the Tuesday evening Wake-Up Benton Harbor radio show, (c) the Aspiring Young Journalist program that employs, nurtures and develops Benton Harbor youth, (d) the A 4 Asthma program in collaboration with partners at the University of Illinois Public Health Department and Environmental Fridays, Inc., and (e) five Benton Harbor Resource Fairs in collaboration with local government and Michigan state agencies including with the Environmental Justice Public Advocate in the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE). Tobias was appointed chair of the Benton Harbor Water Community Response Team by Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Oct. 19, 2021. She is the founding director of Benton Harbor Team Solutions whose mission is to assist residents, businesses and stakeholders by ensuring access to safe, clean drinking water for Benton Harbor residents. She partners with Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) Americorps VISTA to provide employment to Team Solutions workers from Benton Harbor.

Heidi LeSane is a Life Scientist and works at the Environmental Protection Agency, Air and Radiation Division in Region 4. As the Asthma Program coordinator, Heidi has a focus to decrease the number of asthmatics exposed to indoor environmental asthma triggers and to educate individuals on the environmental management of asthma. She also serves as a Technical Officer for Asthma/Indoor Air Quality Assistance Agreements. Heidi is the Environmental Justice Coordinator for the division and coordinates the Air Quality Flag Program for the region. Heidi works closely with state and local agencies and non-profit organizations to achieve her goals. Heidi LeSane is a proud graduate of Auburn University at Montgomery with a BS in biology and has her Master of Public Administration in environmental management from Troy State University.
