    Chan Shun Hall, Garber Auditorium

Brian Strayer, emeritus professor of history at Andrews University, will take a look at the life of the Adventist pioneer Hiram Edson, who introduced the "Sanctuary Doctrine" to Adventists. The presentation will provide a synopsis of Strayer's new book by the same title as the talk.

Until Strayer’s book, no previous volume on Edson had been written. Indeed, it was difficult to write about him because Edson kept no diaries, wrote few letters and contributed little to church publications. Moreover, Edson possessed a divisive personality and was called a “confirmed crank” and “a trial to the church” by many of his contemporaries.

Strayer’s presentation, based on over 300 primary and secondary sources, will describe Edson’s genealogical history, his charismatic experiences, his post-Millerite activities, and his enemies and friends. Strayer will also explore why Hiram Edson remains an important figure in Seventh-day Adventist history despite his difficult personality and early failings.

All are invited to attend.
