Life Stories | Posted on December 15, 2023

Larry Stewart Ulery of Berrien Springs, Michigan passed away suddenly on Dec. 6, 2023. He had just celebrated his 75th birthday on Nov. 30. Larry was a beloved father, brother and friend who will be remembered for his gentle spirit and commitment to service.

Larry was born in St. Joseph, Michigan to Bruce and Mary Ulery. He thrived in the loving community there along with his three brothers, Jim, Ron, and his twin brother Harry. He went on to honorably serve in the United States Army. After his service, Larry diligently pursued his higher education. He earned his bachelor's degree of science in health from Western Michigan University (1976), his Master of Arts in Counseling and Guidance from Andrews University (1980), and eventually a Master of Science in Administration from the University of Notre Dame (1990).

It was during his time at Andrews University where he experienced two major impacts on his life. The first was becoming a member of the Seventh-day Adventist church in 1977—a faith journey he would carry with him the rest of his life. The second was marrying the love of his life, Lally John, in 1980 in the presence of a loving community in Pune, India. Their strong bond of love and faith was evident to all around them, until Lally's untimely passing in 2016. They had two beautiful children, Shawn and Richelle.

Larry's value for higher education had a profound impact on his career path. He had a fulfilling career as a professor at Lake Michigan College, Western University, and Andrews University. He was beloved by his students, who appreciated his passion for service and stress management. ... He also taught Sabbath School along with his wife and held various roles as an active church member at All Nations and Pioneer Memorial Church in Berrien Springs, Michigan.

Larry touched the lives of so many and we celebrate a life well lived – a shining example of service and devotion. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lally and his parents. He is survived by his children, Shawn Ulery and Richelle Kuriata (Shaun), his siblings Jim, Ron (Betty), and Harry, and a host of family and friends.
