Newmyer Classic 2024 Features 40 High School Teams
And nearly 450 athletes.
Andrews University is hosting the annual Newmyer Classic from Jan. 24–27. The basketball tournament showcases 40 high school teams from across the United States and Canada, with nearly 450 student participants.
“On behalf of Andrews University, and our athletic director, Kevin Wooldridge, it is our pleasure to welcome each of these high school basketball teams to Andrews University for our annual Newmyer Classic tournament,” says Frances Faehner, vice president for Campus & Student Life. “It is a great privilege to host these student athletes and dedicated coaches as they use the unique gifts God has given them, work together to achieve goals and come together to praise and worship God on Friday evening and Sabbath.”
Teams will be split into two men’s divisions and two women’s divisions. Beginning on Thursday morning at 8 a.m., the participants will compete in a series of games held at the Andreasen Center for Wellness, Johnson Gym and Andrews Academy gym. The competitions will continue through Friday afternoon, with limited seating available to the public.
On Friday evening, participants and attendees are invited to attend a Friday Night Vespers service at the Howard Performing Arts Center at 7:15 p.m. A special Sabbath service for tournament participants and guests will take place at Pioneer Memorial Church at 2 p.m., featuring speaker Taurus Montgomery.
A set of championship games will take place on Saturday evening, Jan. 27, beginning at 6:30 p.m. though seating for the public will be limited. The games will be followed by an awards ceremony in the Andreasen Center for Wellness Recreation Center.
A number of the games will be livestreamed on YouTube for those who are unable to attend in person. The livestream can be accessed here.
“This tournament is all about providing a distinctly Christ-centered environment for students, coaches and fans to participate in,” Kevin Wooldridge, event director, states. “The Newmyer Classic has a rich history of great sportsmanship and conduct by coaches, fans and players that helps to make this one of the best tournaments available.”
