The trend of embracing “2024 the plot” has taken social media by storm, with individuals from various walks of life adopting this mindset as they navigate the unfolding events of this year. From the leap year in February, the Olympics and Paralympics, the second mission to the moon after Apollo 13, and historical elections in nations such as Mexico, Taiwan, and the United States, and a new EU Commission, members of Gen Z are doing everything “for the plot.” They plan to position themselves as the main character in their story by doing stuff that they wouldn't normally do. They are going to make bold decisions to control their narrative by building their own worth and sense of security. By making goals outside of their comfort zone, Gen Zers plan to cultivate their own identity and foster better connections with others.

Makenna, a senior nursing student at Southern Adventist University, embodies the spirit of movement with her ambitious goals. She aims to become more fluent in Spanish, embrace new opportunities, and allocate more time to her hobbies and creative pursuits. These aspirations reflect a desire to push her narrative and maintain a more well-rounded identity. Another student, Catherine, a Sophomore biology student from Walla Walla University shares similar sentiments by expressing a commitment to say “no” with purpose and not settling on impromptu decisions. This quest is to make intentional choices that align with her personal values and aspirations.

Some people are making a positive change this year for the plot. Hannah Biggs, a sophomore history major at Southern Adventist University, aims to break free from her coffee addiction, excel in her classes, and explore more of the world. An Andrews student, Hannah Kim (senior, nursing), emphasizes the importance of mental health, social connections, and breaking free from her gaming addiction.

Others see this movement as an opportunity to live life more freely and happily. Jessica, who is an undecided sophomore studying at Pacific Union College, is ready to take risks and savor the joyous moments in life. Leni, a high school student from Germany, is focused on learning Spanish, finding happiness, and curating an aesthetically pleasing life through a personal Pinterest board. Romantic aspirations also come into play for some, like Ellie, a senior nursing student at Southern Adventist University, setting her sights on finding love, being more social, learning Spanish, and getting a six-pack.

As the “2024 the plot” mindset gains momentum, it's clear that this year is not just a collection of days but a canvas for each individual person to paint their own stories on by making bold decisions and embracing the unexpected. Whether it’s breaking habits, pursuing passions, or seeking love, Gen Zers are determined to be the main character of their own narratives in this special year.
