This week, I spoke with Skyler Campbell (senior, graphic design) about her role as BSCF (Black Student Christian Forum) President, as well as the organization's goals and events. In addition, she discusses the importance of Black History Month and the meaningfulness of this celebration.

Introduce yourself! Why did you decide to run for BSCF president this year?

Hi! My name is Skyler Campbell. I'm from Chicago, IL and I am a senior studying graphic design. I wanted to be BSCF President because, when I joined my freshman year, it gave me a place to be myself and I wanted to maintain that space for other people who needed that same space here on campus.

What is your vision for BSCF?

My goal for this year is to make sure that BSCF maintains its strong foundation so that we can continue to be a club that positively represents the diaspora. We have so many alumni that support and encourage us, and I want to have this legacy that they've created to continue for years to come.

What are some favorite memories you have from being a part of BSCF (even as an attendant of BSCF events)?

Some of my favorite memories from BSCF have to be from meetings. It's always something special when like-minded people come together and create something that everyone can enjoy. From the jokes and sometimes off-topic conversations, there's never a dull moment.

Are there specific cultural events or celebrations planned by BSCF to honor Black History Month, and how can members get involved?

There are special events that not only members, but everyone, can get involved in. One of the annual events that we have during Black History Month is “The Dating Game” which is coming up soon. This event is one that all the students enjoy, including myself. It's a genuinely fun experience to hear some of the answers that people give and the atmosphere in the room is unmatched.

What makes Black History Month particularly meaningful to you?

Sometimes I find myself forgetting that my culture is so deeply ingrained in this country and that often causes me to sink myself into the background. Black History Month reminds me of who I am and of all the people who paved the way for my successes. Some of those people are in my own family and I love that we have a month that celebrates us as a people.

What are the club's long-term goals in terms of promoting Black history awareness and inclusivity beyond the month of February?

In the long term, the club's goals are to make sure that we are not only educating the campus on our culture but the community as a whole. I would like to make sure that our voices are heard and valued no matter where we are, and if we can start here, it would be a step in the right direction.

How does BSCF see its role in preserving and contributing to the ongoing legacy of Black history and culture?

I believe that the best way that we can contribute to the ongoing legacy of Black history and culture is to foster a community on this campus that advocates for the needs and concerns of students of color. One that gives us support, pushes us far beyond the bounds of this campus, and gives us a foundation to go into the world and make a difference for other people of color to do the same.
