Clarification in relation to our “Campus Inaccessibility” Ideas article in the February 2 issue of the Student Movement. The office of the Vice-President for Financial Administration (Chip Meekma Jr.) is responsible for structural accessibility–ramps, automatic doors, elevators–on the Andrews University campus, not the Student Success Center. While we did not claim the contrary in our Issue 14 “Campus Inaccessibility” article, readers could have inferred this from context. We apologize for this confusion. The Disability Services office within the Student Success Center works with students to provide accessibility for access to classrooms, classroom accommodations, and access to housing accommodations. Kristine Walker-Fraser is the Disability Services coordinator.
Also, while the Nethery entrance used by the writer and interviewee of the article did not function, there is an entrance on the Bell Hall side of Nethery Hall with a functioning blue button. When we, the editorial staff, checked, the Campus Center-side outside button was working, as were the two buttons between the outside and inside doors. There is one more automatic door button on the inside of the inside door, which is not working.
We will be doing a comprehensive check and assessment of all buildings on campus in a future publication and will continue to report on campus accessibility. We have a strong interest in accessibility working as well as possible on campus.
