Last Saturday and Sunday (February 24 and 25, respectively), the AU Theatre Wing presented their annual show, “You Can’t Take It With You”! If you haven’t had the chance to attend the play and know nothing about it, here’s some useful info. The story is centered around the eccentric Sycamore family. Everyone only does what makes them truly happy, resulting in unusual pastimes–writing plays, making fireworks, snake hunting– for the various family members. The “normal” daughter meets and gets engaged to her boss’ son, so suddenly, the Sycamores need to prepare to pretend to be an average family for one dinner so as not to ruin the engagement. But what happens when the groom’s family, the Kirbys, arrive a day early? Following the play, I interviewed some students who attended and cast members to get some insight into how it went. Let’s see what they have to say!
Bianca Loss (junior, elementary education), whom I interviewed for the teaser article, played Rheba, the maid. She said, “The play went very well! We had a full house both times, and both audiences were really receptive, which was amazing.” When asked about the most enjoyable parts, she said she especially enjoyed “hearing people laugh at our jokes, spending time with the cast, and hearing how much people enjoyed the show.” I recall how excited she was about the audience’s responses to the comedic elements of the story, and it seems like it was a success!
Christen Li (senior, global studies and anthropology), an audience member during the second showing, really loved the “fantastic set and costuming.” She said, “I thought that the actors inhabited their roles well and added interesting little quirks and mannerisms that fleshed out the story. The story was hilarious, and I felt that the message about doing what makes you happy fits well with this generation, even though the play was written decades ago.”
Nate Miller (sophomore, English, French, and music), who played Tony Kirby, said, “The play—You Can’t Take It With You by Moss Hart and George Kaufman—that AU Theater Wing put on last weekend was a reassertion that student-led organizations can produce art, and make it fun. The students involved in the production began rehearsals near the beginning of last semester, and, with time, the troupe not only brought the various elements of the production together but forged bonds that will last lifetimes. The magic of theater permeated Buller Hall last weekend, bringing hope and excitement to everyone who witnessed the Theater Wing’s latest accomplishment.”
Another year, another wonderful performance by the AU Theater Wing! Let’s have one last round of applause for the brilliant actors, directors, and all personnel who worked hard to put together this wonderful performance!
