Fall Break Festivities!

Interviewed by Andrew Francis

Halfway through the Fall Semester, Andrews University students and faculty were given a brief rest with the arrival of Fall Break. With Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 14 and 15, off from classes, students used the extended weekend in various ways: Some went home, some traveled to other places to visit friends, and others stayed on campus and tried to be productive. The only downside to the brief vacation was that there was too little time to do so much—and, as with any break from school, time seems to go too fast. Several Andrews students shared how they spent their Fall Break and what they were or were not able to get done.

“Over Fall Break, I hung out with friends, slept a lot, and did some ceramics. I wanted to accomplish a documentary and some work for one of my jobs, but I didn’t get to do any of them because I got too distracted.”

—Nigel Emiliare (senior, digital communications)

“For Fall Break, I actually stayed on campus because my brother came from California and so I [hung] out with him. I didn’t get enough time to sleep, surprisingly, but I actually stayed up like every night. I [also] watched Inside Out 2.”

—Nathaniel Powell (senior, theology and digital communications)

“I went to Southern [Adventist] University for their LAC [Latin American Club] night, for the weekend. I think something that I didn’t do was sleep or catch up on my assignments. But it’s okay! I had a great time meeting people over at Southern.”

—Meryen González (senior, public relations and marketing)

“Over Fall Break, I went back to Georgia. I got to spend time with family [and] just like a break from all the craziness of midterms. I didn’t get to drive as much as I would like to. Back home I have a car, but not here [on Andrews’ campus]. So I feel like if I had another day, I could have done more things out.”

—DeeAnn Wallace (junior, digital communications)

“I hung out with my mom, and I went to a seminar in South Bend. The person who was speaking was Brian Stevenson; he’s a famous black lawyer. [The seminar was about] activism in the black community and the injustices that Black and brown people have in the criminal justice system. I wasn’t able to get done as much homework as I wanted to.”

—Samantha Woolford-Hunt (junior, graphic design)

“Over Fall Break, I worked at the Center for Youth Evangelism in the [Seventh-day Adventist Theological] Seminary. Besides that, I went to a birthday party with some friends and then did homework. At work, we’re working on a project where we’re updating our websites, and I’m working on the new design for those, and it’s not done yet. It’s taking a lot longer than I thought it would, so I was hoping that it would get done.”

—Kara Shepard (junior, digital communications)

“I did a lot of sleeping in. I think I spent every day asleep for at least 14 hours. I didn’t do any of the homework that I was supposed to and I ended up doing it on Wednesday after Fall Break.

—Lia Glass (junior, digital communications)

“I went apple picking for the first time. It was really fun. We [Lia and I] went thrifting, and we lifted [weights]. I wish there was one more day so that I felt like it was worth to go home.”

—Celeste Velinova (junior, digital communications)
