The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry Goldwater. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue research careers in these fields. Mathematics major Mykhaylo Malakhov received the Barry Goldwater Scholarship for 2018. He is one of six Michigan students to receive the award. Mykhaylo's mentors at Andrews University are professors Anthony Bosman and Shandelle M. Henson.
Jonathan "Archie" Morgan Wheeler, a major in Physics and Wisconsin native, was named a Barry Goldwater Scholarship Honorable Mention in 2013 and 2014.
In 2009, Libby Megna, a Michigan native and mathematics minor and biology major, was awarded the Goldwater Scholarship.
