Andrews University is demonstrating its commitment to the Counseling Psychology PhD Program by introducing a 50% Scholarship Program for all full-time current and entering students into the program.

Brown Bag Lunch

The Counseling Psychology Department's Brown Bag Lunches encourage research, discussion, and debate. Each counseling psychology PhD student is expected to facilitate at least two Brown Bag Lunches each semester. Please contact Dr. Woolford-Hunt for topic suggestions and approval. All students and faculty in the GPC department are welcome to attend.  These presentations will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To be prepared for the discussion read the article before coming.

Social Justice Opportunity

"Counseling psychology's core principles and values are conceptually in line with social justice values and initiatives... The goal of social justice is for an equal participation of all groups in a society that is mutually shaped to meet their needs. Social justice includes a vision of society in which the distribution of resources is equitable and all members are physically and psychologically safe and secure" (Bell, 1977).

The birth of the Socrates AfterSchool Program: In a letter dated March 25, 2003; Rev. Yvonne Hester, Director of the Benton Harbor Street Ministry wrote to then Andrews University Vice-President Newton Hoilette, "Our community is yet in need of more structured programs and activities to empower children, youth, and adults in math, science and reading. With these programs in place, we can raise the standards in our community through educational programs. Andrews University has qualified staff and students to make this program available and successful."

Dr. Hoilette initiated the project by meeting with Bill Mutch, David Steen, Sesmond Murray, and Michey Kutzner. After several meetings with educators and community activists from Benton Harbor, the Socrates AfterSchool Project was born.

Judith Stanton, interim Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor wrote appreciatively: "Your students are very invested in our members... They provide a mentoring role that can greatly influence and inspire our young people. We are proud to be associated with professionals and young adults who care so deeply for children."
