Physical Therapy Services

All services provided by the AUPT Clinic are physical therapy services defined and regulated by Michigan State law and thus can only be provided directly by or through supervision of a nationally board-certified and state-licensed physical therapist.  The AUPT Clinic offers two types of physical therapy services, (1) Treatment for a Medical Condition (TMC), (2) Fitness Promoting and Injury Prevention (FPIP).

Treatment for a Medical Condition (TMC)

These services are for individuals seeking treatment for a new or recently flared up medical condition or injury. Conditions treated include but are not limited to:

  • Sprained joints (ankles, knees, wrist or other joints)
  • Strained muscles (groin, hamstrings, calf)
  • Flared up old injuries (arthritic knee or hip)
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Lower back pain
  • After care for orthopedic surgery (total knee, total hip, rotator cuff, etc)
  • Shoulder and rotator cuff issues
  • Falls and balance problems
  • Dizziness, room spinning, vertigo
  • Stroke rehabilitation
  • Traumatic brain injury rehabilitation
Accessing TMC Services

In accordance with Michigan state law, the AUPT Clinic offers two ways for you to access our TMC services:

  1. Direct Access: Under direct access, you can schedule an appointment without an order from another provider such as your medical doctor. If you are seeking treatment for a medical condition under direct access, the law requires that if your condition does not improve or resolve within 21 days or 10 physical therapy treatments, whichever comes first, your physical therapist must refer you to the appropriate healthcare professional for further testing.
  2. Prescription: You can schedule an appointment based on a prescription from another provider such as your medical doctor. Healthcare professionals who can prescribe physical therapy in the state of Michigan include: advanced practice registered nurses (such as nurse practitioners, midwives, and other nurse specialists), dentists, podiatrists, and doctors of medicine (such as primary care physicians, orthopedic medical doctors, and doctors of osteopathy). If you do not show progress within 21 days or 10 physical therapy visits, your physical therapist may send you back to your referring provider.

Fitness Promoting & Injury Prevention (FPIP)

The AUPT Clinic offers FPIP services for individuals wanting to work on their fitness goals and/or improve their physical health to prevent injury. The AUPT Clinic recommends biennial FPIP Evaluations to help you understand how to care for your physical health and maintain optimum mobility at any age. You should not wait until you experience an injury or develop a mobility issue to schedule an Evaluation; early detection and prevention are always the best medicine. A few reasons to seek FPIP services are to:

  • Learn about your body
  • Become stronger
  • Become more flexible
  • Improve in your sport
  • Improve focus for work or study
  • Sleep better
  • Learn to manage or prevent common injuries
  • Improve your posture at school, work, or home
  • Learn what exercises are best for your body type

Access to FPIP Services

Michigan state law does not limit your access to this type of service. Meaning you can schedule these services at any time, with or without prescription, and continue receiving these services as long as you and your clinician continue to see benefit.

Service Terminology

Case:

The Case is your entire episode of services received at the AUPT Clinic, starting with an Evaluation, including all Follow-Up Visits, and ending with a Discharge. When you schedule an Evaluation at the AUPT Clinic, you are opening a new Case with us. You may have more than one Case with us simultaneously if you and your clinician decide it is appropriate, but typically you only have one Case open at a time.

Evaluation (Click Here to Schedule)

An Evaluation is the first visit you will schedule when you want to start a new Case at the AUPT Clinic. During the Evaluation you will be assessed based on the reason you are seeking treatment and the type of treatment you are seeking.

  • An Evaluation is 60 minutes long.
  • You will need to dress in comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that allow you to move freely.
  • You may need to demonstrate different movements like bending or twisting, and positions such as lying down or sitting.
  • Your clinician may request your consent to touch you and may need to see or touch your bare skin.

Follow-Up Visits (Click Here to Schedule)

Follow-Up Visits are scheduled based on the outcome of your Evaluation. You and your clinician will create a plan to help you reach your goals and decide how many Follow-Up Visits are needed.

  • Visits are 60 minutes long.
  • You will need to dress in comfortable, loose-fitting flexible clothes that allow you to move freely.
  • Your clinician may need to provide hands-on treatments to relieve muscle tension, stretch your muscles or joints, etc.
  • You can decline any recommended treatment and are expected to communicate your preferences to your clinician.

Discharge:

Your Case is considered closed with a Discharge. Typically, a Discharge occurs on your last visit when you and your clinician determine you have met your goals. Your clinician may also issue a Discharge if you are not showing commitment to your treatments in one of the following ways:

  • You do not schedule your Follow-Up Visits appropriately.
    • You do not schedule your Follow-Up Visits within the expected time frame after your Evaluation - usually 1-2 weeks after your Evaluation based on what you and your clinician decide.
    • You do not schedule your Follow-Up Visits as agreed upon by you and your clinician in your plan - for example 1-2 times a week for 3 weeks.
  • You do not show commitment to attending your treatment sessions.
    • You miss visits without notice.
    • You cancel visits with less than 24-hour notice.
  • You are not compliant outside of sessions with the home program.

The AUPT Clinic is committed to your success and our clinicians will work with you to help you overcome the barriers that may keep you from meeting your goals. It is our aim to keep you working toward your goals and thus we will make efforts to work with you to avoid unexpected Discharge. However, we recognize there may be times when you are not able to provide the time commitment needed to continue your Case and that Discharge will be needed. If that happens, we encourage you to reopen your Case when you are once again ready and able to commit to your sessions.

Telehealth Services

Telehealth is the use of electronic communications to provide and deliver a host of health-related information and healthcare services (including physical therapy related information and services) over large and small distances. Telehealth visits are an effective way to receive physical therapy services when you are unable to attend an in-person visit.

Important Details About Telehealth

  • Your location during the treatment matters - The physical therapist must be licensed in the State you are located in during the time of your treatment. The AUPT clinic can currently service Michigan and Indiana.
  • You need an electronic device - You need to have access to a device such as a computer, smart-phone, tablet, or other device that can handle video calls and is connected to the internet. You also need to be able to use this device effectively to participate in the telehealth session; if you need help you might have to ask "tech savvy" family member or a friend.
  • You need a treatment area - it is recommended that you prepare a treatment space for yourself ahead of time.
    • You need room to move, stand, sit or lie down (a yoga mat on the floor works well).
    • A place to set the video device free standing so that you can participate in the treatment hands free and still see your therapist and your therapist see you.
  • The AUPT Clinic uses the following methods for telehealth visits:
    • Andrews University Zoom Pro secure password protected video call.
    • PtEverywhere secure video call.
    • Other methods can be used if initiated by the patient.
  • Most insurances will not reimburse you for telehealth visits - if you are wanting reimbursement, it is best to call and find out before scheduling.
Telehealth Evaluation (Click Here to Schedule)

This is a service used for those who are not already patients, cannot come in for an in-person Evaluation, and would like to receive physical therapy telehealth services. In most circumstances, it is recommended you start with an in-person visit because there are obvious restrictions with a Telehealth Evaluation that will limit what can be done. However, in special circumstances where an in-person Evaluation is not possible, Telehealth Evaluations are appropriate.

Getting Reimbursed by Your Insurance

The AUPT Clinic does not bill insurance. If you have insurance you can submit for reimbursement on your own. Here are a few tips:

  • Call your insurance BEFORE you start at the AUPT Clinic
    • Ask your insurance what you need to do to get reimbursed for out-of-pocket physical therapy services.
      • They may have a pre-approval process.
      • They may give you a form for your clinician to fill out on the first visit.
      • They may want to contact the AUPT Clinic.
      • They may require you to see your medical doctor first.
      • They only pay for certain codes and services that you will want to tell your therapist about.
  • Make sure you look at your out-of-network rates
    • The AUPT Clinic will be considered out-of-network and thus if you do get reimbursed it will likely be at these rates.
  • Check your deductible
    • If you haven't met your deductible then you will not recieve money back until the deductible is met.
      • But submitting your claim will begin paying toward your deductible.
  • Check your co-pay
    • There is no need to submit your claim if you have already met your deductible and your co-pay is higher than the cost of the AUPT Clinic’s services.
  • Be persistent
    • If you think you've done everything right and your claim is denied, submit it again.
      • Sometimes re-submitting the same claim without changes ends up in a different result (aka approval). Who really knows why?
    • Don't be shy, keep pestering them.
      • If your reimbursement is important to you, don't give up.
Best of luck - while insurance companies are notoriously difficult to deal with, you are your best advocate.
