Project Spotlights

Skidmore UV Pump Redesign

In this project, the student team was challenged to redesign boiler feed and condensate return pump components to reduce costs and improve reliability without negatively impacting performance. Throughout the Define -> Ideate -> Prototype process, cost optimization for the UV pump was achieved through material analysis, and new opportunities were identified for updating components.

Skidmore had this to say about the project:

“Taking this development work outside of our walls freed up our engineering resources to work on higher priority projects.  Additionally, I think having the students work alongside industry partners with a company provides them insight into how professional projects and engineers work and think.”

Loma Linda University

An agreement betweem Loma Linda University and Andrews University allows for the sharing of intellectual property information, collaboration on medical device projects, and involvement by the students.

This partnership allowed students from the School of Engineering to get engage with doctors, nurses, and clinicians, to solve their problems directly, and have real-world experience in their capstone courses.

The results of the first year of partnering are:

  • Completion of design, prototyping, and testing of three medical devices, including a surgical camera, a ventilator control system, and a device for the neonatal care unit.
  • One provisional patent application for a novel technology created by a student in support of a medical device design.
  • Many hours of experiential learning for the students.
  • This project focused on creating a testing setup for highway concrete barriers.
  • The video below shares the student experience as part of the engineering senior design course.
