Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is defined as temporary employment authorization directly related to an F-1 student's field of study.

OPT is authorized once an F-1 student completes the program of study. Students can apply for OPT beginning 90 days before the program of study end date or up to 60 days after the program of study end date.

Standard OPT is authorized for one calendar year, and students in STEM degrees may be eligible for a 24-month extension once the standard OPT year is completed.

• Carefully read the OPT Application Guide
• Complete and submit the OPT Status Form to International Student Services
• Follow all of the remaining online or mailing steps in the OPT Application Guide
