Calvin Thomsen currently serves as an assistant professor at Loma Linda University where he teaches relational/psychological studies, health care management, and spirituality. He is a southern California native, born in Los Angeles at the White Memorial Hospital. He is a graduate of La Sierra University, has a Master of Divinity degree from Andrews University Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. He is currently nearing completion of a PhD degree in marital and family therapy from Loma Linda University.
He has spent his most of his ministerial career in the Southern California Conference. He has been the pastor for Family Ministries on the staff of the Loma Linda University Church. He served as youth pastor of the Temple City Church, Associate Pastor for Family Ministries at the Glendale City Church, Senior Pastor of the North Hills and Simi Valley Churches, and Senior Pastor of the Vallejo Drive Church. He joined the Southeastern California Conference in 1997 as Senior Pastor of the Azure Hills Church.
Calvin is pastoral sponsor for the Family Ministries Committee, Adventist Singles Ministry, Divorce Care, Family Forum, Discover Bible School, and some additional outreach groups. He conducts the twice years preparation for marriage series in the fall and spring. He also does premarital and other forms of relationship counseling. He enjoys a wide range of pastoral activities including teaching and preaching, giving Bible studies and visitation. He also teaches in the pastoral ministry program at La Sierra University and the marital and family therapy program at Loma Linda University. He has also taught at Avondale College, Andrews University and Fuller Theological Seminary.
Calvin married Marilyn Joy Fagal in 1974. The Thomsens have two children.
Stephen, age 20, is a student at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood and Julianne, 17, is a senior at Loma Linda Academy. Marilyn is Director of Communication and Development for the East Campus of Loma Linda University Medical Center.
At this stage of life the term “spare time” seems like a meaningless term, but Calvin does enjoy backpacking, playing the guitar and piano, rock climbing, and snow skiing.
Dr. Thomsen is an adjunct professor for the Andrews University Doctor of Ministry program. He is a lead teacher in the Family Ministry concentration.
